Mike Ezunronye is one of the leading Nigeria Actor in the Nigeria Entertainment industry, the Airtel Ambassador graduated from Nnamdi Azikwe University where he studied accounting. Mike who has featured in several nollywood flicks made an indelible mark in Nollywood with his first movie Broken Marriage produced by Dickson Iroegbu . In this interview with Yinka Lawal Mike speaks about his role in Dayo Amusa’s Unforgivable movie which won him awards at the Best of Nollywood awards, where he acted along other Yoruba movie cast, delivered his Yoruba line fluently.
You have been scarce lately in movies
I am not scarce, the truth of the matter is I am always very busy, I can’t say I am resting, I have been busy, you can say I have been selective in movies I take now and the roles I take. You get to a level that you cannot do everything that comes your way; you have to select the one you think is good because you owe lot of allegiance to your fans and to yourself you have to keep it moving. If you are passionate about what you do and I believe right now I should do movies that should set me on a better bright light.
Are working on anything presently now?
I just finished shooting an international movie
Is it produced by you?
Not yet, still watching the terrain, would say I am a near getting there, I would like to capitalize on people. You have to understand the terrain properly before you can say you want to produce, a lot of my colleagues are producing but I am not ready for that now. I am watching the water, when the water is still, will jump in it.
Can you tell us about the international Movie?
It is a movie I just finished shooting in Canada, it is shot with foreign Canadian directors and some Barbados, It is a series in Canada and in the states too ,I know some people will not be familiar with. In Hollywood, people buy movies because of its content unlike the way people buy movies here; it is the one with huge contents.
You are currently the face of Airtel, how has it been?
It has been great, we have come alive, and it is a brighter light. Airtel is a brand that is most supportive brand, if you go through research discover that , and I am not boxed to a corner.
How much were you paid?
I won’t want to discuss that
Comparing the movie standard in Nigeria and abroad, you have experience both, how would you describe it?
The international standard is off course much better, there are lot of things we need to catch up with,we have lot of works to do.
How do you think Nigeria can improve?
The technical knowhow.
How has marriage life being like?
I am not talking about my marriage
You starred in Dayo Amusa’s “unforgivable” movie, how was the experience like acting a Yoruba Film?
It was the first Yoruba movie and I won an award for that, for me it was a challenge and I love challenge when it comes to characterization, Dayo did a great job, they were very professional on the set unlike what I thought, thumbs up to the Yoruba film industry, very professional set, I would love to do that again and again, it was wonderful doing that.
How would describe the Yoruba movie to the English movie industry you are used to?
I don’t term it as Yoruba and English industry, that is the mistake we keep making, we are one industry, I try to bridge that gap, when I came on the set of Dayo’s movie, I heard some people saying English actor and I said they should not refer to me like that, am an actor and we all from one industry. Some actors from Hollywood or other from another country would not look at Pete Edochie or Jide Kosoko as a Yoruba or English Actor, to them they are actors. I don’t buy that, we are all under one Canopy and umbrella and until we hold hand and push as one force then we can achieve what we want to achieve from any political or corporate organization.
What can you say about the politics going on in the body, AGN?
I don’t know about any politics going on, I know I have a president and her name is Ibinabo Fiberisima
Some of the role you take up are bad, are you actually bad boy?
That is a role and movie personality, am one person who has played different character, I have played everything from a lover boy to the one who has cheated, am still setting it out to the producer to keep sending out scripts that are technical. Like you just mentioned me acting in the Yoruba movie, lot of people didn’t know am multi lingua until I did that, I was surprised too.
One of my most cherished awards I won was at the Best of Nollywood Awards (BON) as best actor in Yoruba film; it shocked many people and even myself. That is just to say am happy working with the Yoruba industry that we are one body, I will just say Yoruba sect under nollywood, nothing like discriminating.
As an actor when you are given a role, how do you go about it?
As an actor, if am given a role, my part as an actor is to make it look real, I try as much as possible to make my craft look real, if you watch movie and Mike Ezunroye is there and you didn’t notice then I have failed as an actor. I definitely try to get your emotions out, when am suppose to get a pat in the back I do and if am suppose to be nasty I to that, that is what am paid for to do as actor.
Some people term you as a play boy, what can you say to that?
That is why I said am an actor, I don’t know
Most actors in Nigeria shy away from nude role, as an actor, if you are given such role, would you take it, if you are paid well?
If you mean nude, I will never get nude in a movie
Why, as an actor, you should be able to act any role?
I owe and allegiance to my family and fans, It is my duty to choose whatever role I want, it is my duty to say this is what I want and what I don’t.
When you act in movies, you act the character, after playing a particular role in a movie, some people believe you go beyond acting ,that you get intimate, how true is that?
We don’t go beyond that, do you know how many people that are behind the camera, we have over 40 people behind the camera, tell me can you kiss your boyfriend in front of everybody and get really intimate, all we do is making you believe it happens, it is called acting and that is why I am Mike Ezunruoye.
